MicroSelect™ : An Intelligent and Integrated Solution for Microbial Pre-Screening

Introduction

In microbiology laboratories, bacterial strain pre-screening generally requires several Petri dishes, complex protocols, and various materials. This process can be time-consuming, costly, and prone to errors. MicroSelect™ addresses these challenges with a hybrid tri-compartment Petri dish that combines three of the most commonly used selective and differential culture media: TSA with 5% sheep blood, MacConkey agar, and Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA). The result is a simplified workflow that enables the visual identification of key bacterial characteristics in a single incubation,

while reducing laboratory resources and waste.

MicroSelect™ is designed for academic, clinical, and food safety laboratories, and can be integrated into standard microbiology protocols without major modifications. Whether for student training, food pathogen screening, or rapid diagnostics, the MicroSelect platform delivers clarity, reliability, and operational efficiency. Its ready-to-use format and compatibility with AI-supported workflows make it an ideal solution for laboratories modernizing their processes.

Culture Media
TSA + 5% Sheep Blood

This compartment provides a non-selective nutrient medium capable of supporting the growth of a wide range of organisms. It enables the identification of hemolytic activity, which is useful for distinguishing species such as Streptococcus pyogenes (β-hemolytic), Streptococcus pneumoniae (α-hemolytic), or Enterococcus faecalis (non-hemolytic).

Gélose MacConkey

Designed to isolate Gram-negative enteric bacteria, this agar also helps differentiate them based on their ability to ferment lactose. Fermenters such as Escherichia coli form pink colonies, while Salmonella or Pseudomonas appear colorless.

Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA)

This selective medium promotes the growth of halotolerant organisms such as staphylococci. It differentiates species based on their ability to ferment mannitol. Staphylococcus aureus ferments mannitol, turning the medium yellow, while S. epidermidis leaves the medium pink or red.

Why Choose MicroSelect™?

Conventional methods require multiple plates, increasing handling time and the risk of contamination. MicroSelect™ combines three tests into a single compact format, reducing the complexity of sample processing and documentation. It also provides immediate visual cues, making interpretation and follow-up easier.

MicroSelect™ is compatible with AI-assisted analyses and imaging-based workflows. Its compartmentalized design enables model training for the automated pre-classification of bacterial traits,

making it suitable for digital laboratories and remote learning.

Laboratories can significantly reduce their costs. A laboratory analyzing 100 isolates per month can save more than $7,500 per year in consumables, labor, and waste management. Manufactured in Ottawa, MicroSelect™ plates also have a lower carbon footprint than imported products. In addition, academic sales support internships and applied research projects for local students.

Technical Specifications

Each MicroSelect™ plate measures 100 mm in diameter and includes three compartments filled with TSA + 5% sheep blood, MacConKey agar, and Mannitol Salt Agar. The plates are sterile and ready to use. Store between 2°C and 8°C and use within 6 months of the manufacturing date. The format is compatible with most incubators and colony counters.

Applications

MicroSelect™ is a versatile solution suited to a wide range of microbiological applications. In academic settings, it provides students with a practical platform for learning about selective and differential media. In clinical microbiology, it supports preliminary pathogen screening by combining commonly used tests. In food testing laboratories, it enables rapid contaminant detection while reducing handling, thereby meeting quality control requirements. Finally, in research centers, MicroSelect™ serves as an effective platform for studying microbial diversity, antibiotic resistance, and bioinformatics training.

Whatever the context, its cost-effectiveness and compatibility with imaging technologies make it a strategic choice for improving productivity while ensuring optimal traceability and reliability.
